I was told over Vent that PureKnight asked me how to hide the chat HUD in COD4.  He asked this after I both announced and hid the HUD, so of course I didn't see his question.  Anyway...  For those of you who are interested in how to do it, I'm going to explain the steps.  First, be sure to enable the Console for COD4.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, read the first part of my tutorial on Using COD4's in game Demo Recording.  Once you have enabled the game to use the Console, follow these steps:

  • Join the server
  • Once you're fully in the game (meaning you're running around and able to shoot an enemy), hit your tilde key (again, if you don't know what this is, read the Demo Tutorial I linked to above)
  • The console should have appeared at the top of the screen when you hit your tilde key.  Type out \cg_chattime 0 and hit your Enter key to accept the change.
  • Hit the tilde key to hide the console again (if needed).

Since you're entering "0" as the number for the chat time, the Chat HUD will not come up at all.  If you want the Chat HUD back, just hit your tilde key again to call up the console and type in \cg_chattime 12000 (12000 being the default time).

-------------{ Want to know your Frame Per Second in game? }-------------

  • Join the server
  • Once you're fully in the game, hit your tilde key to open the console
  • Type out \cg_drawFPS and type either a 1, 2 or 3 after it to denote which option of testing you'd like to see and hit your Enter key to accept the change.  So if you just wanted a simple FPS list, you'd type in \cg_drawFPS 1
  • Hit your tilde key to hide the console if needed.

The FPS readings will be visible in the upper right corner of your screen.  If you no longer wish to see your FPS, hit the tilde key again, type in \cg_drawFPS 0 and hit your Enter key.

-------------{ Missed what someone typed out in the text Chat HUD? }-------------

When busy with the game, you might miss what someone had typed in chat.  To check back on it, hold down your Shift key and hit your tilde key. This will open the console to full screen, where you can see the old chat text.  It's not a clean solution unfortunately, because the chat will be mixed in with a bunch of other stuff, like Punk Buster info stats and other readouts the game may be handling, but at least it's something.  You'll have to hit your tilde key again to hide the console.

THANKS! Now we know why you are not talkative person.  Roll Eyes I know (or come to this understanding) the chat box can be a quite distracting. God bless!
