I deleted Call of Duty 4 from my system because I cannot get it to run right. None of my settings under Controls and Options hold. They default to whatever the game wants. I get a partial screen; it is cut off at the edges. And things like brightness do not hold.

I do not know what to do, but I am about to reinstall the game and hope that it works.

I do not know if this is because of Windows 7 or what. I have not had so much trouble with a computer since I had Windows 95 as the operating system.

Hang in there Rabbit. I'll see if I can find something on the web about known problems with Windows 7 and COD4.

where did you buy the game? from the store, steam, impulse, or xfire? I had to rebuy because my first copy, from xfire, was booku crazy buggy.

I do find though that if COD 4 terminates outside of pressing the quit the game button it likes to ask you if you want to go back to default settings.

It could also be your graphics drivers, try updating them.

I dont know if these are your problems or if you've already been through most of what comes to my mind but screenshots always help aswell Smiley

The more information provided on your end provided, no matter how insignificant is going to be very helpful in helping us help you fix the problem.

As cortath said hang in there, there is a fix somewhere for this issue I promise.

I have tried several fixes for the issues since downloading the recent mod for COD4 with no luck. I am going to try and find a few minutes (or hours) to delete and reinstall COD4 this weekend so I can get back into the game too.

When you delete make sure you delete all files associated with the game. you may lose campaign data, load saved games, and such (you dont have to delete maps) but a faulty install could be the problem and deleting all info from your computer from the game will give you a fresh start. I had to do this for BHD sometimes when i kept getting kicked from the game.

I just reinstalled Windows 7, so everything I had before was moved to a different folder, something like Old Win.

Anyway, my copy of CoD4 was bought at Wal-Mart.

Reinstalling the graphics drivers, both in regular and in safe mode, had no effect.

None of my settings under controls or options would stick after I logged out of the game.

So, I just reinstalled Windows 7, and now I am reinstalling everything else.

Wish me luck. And good luck to you too, Deacon.

I put the game in compatibility mode -- XP sp 2 -- but it did not help.

This is because the game freezes on me. I stare at a locked up screen. Nothing gets me out but turning off the computer and turning it back on. Then the game wants to run in safe mode.

Right now it is trying to download a map I swear that I downloaded last night. It says it will take about 45 MINUTES to do it.

The only thing I have trouble with is Call of Duty 4. Everything else seems to work fine.

Things seem to be working ok now, except for Ventrilo, which does not seem to want to work when I am in the game. Alt-Tab to the desktop and I can talk to others, in the game tho I have no voice. Worked for a couple of days, however, in open mic -- not push-to-talk. Then that stopped too. I even reinstalled Vent -- the 64-bit version. No success.

Windows 7 Professional reminds me of trying to use Windows 95. Remember the hardware and software conflicts?

My next step is to try to uninstall Ventrilo again. When I did the last time, my settings for server, etc., were retained, which may be the problem. So, I will attempt to uninstall EVERYTHING before I reinstall Vent. I just need to figure out where all the settings info is stored. It does not seem to be where the Ventrilo program is kept under the Program Files folder.

It took awhile for my graphics to show full screen. In the game, I was having wide black vertical bands on the left and right sides of my monitor no matter what the resolution was set to. I kept plugging away at trying to get the graphics driver updated, which finally succeeded (I guess since the driver is dated 7 July 2010). Anyway, I have not had the veritial bands for awhile, and the video has stopped freezing up -- I think.

I still am having an occasional blue screen when my computer finishes POST, but the computer automatically reboots, and things work fine.

I disabled RealTek, so my Logitech USB headset works better, and for a while my Vent worked in open mic mode.

I am just about at the point of uninstalling Windows 7 and installing Windows XP because I don't think the problem is in Call of Duty4 or in Ventrilo. I think Win 7 is still buggy. Well, I will stick with Win 7 awhile longer and try to get it to work.

My brother had the same problem with vent last night, friday 9/3/2010, and he updated vent and the problem was fixed. This is a  rather obvious fix, but just thought I might put that out there as last night I also had a disk boot error that ended up being caused by a loose cable connection. I spent 2 hours trying to figure it out and almost lost all hope.

So just putting that out there Tongue sometimes the obvious is overlooked cuz its too obvious

Thanks for the input, Spartan. I will crack the case and look inside for loose cables. I did upgrade Vent, but I think I have to delete everything, including setup files, as well to get it to work.

Yes if you did not delete ALL files there is still residuals of the old program left.  When you reinstall the program it will look for that folder and leave some things unchanged.

I found traces of Ventrilo all through the Registry, but could find nothing I could identify about the settings -- server, etc. And Vent appeared to be in only one place in Windows Explorer, the program files folder.

I went to Ventrilo's site and got some info about my system's symptoms, but my settings match up. It is only when the game is not on my desktop that I my mic does not work. It is only when I press alt-tab in the middle of a game that I can use my mic.
