Lion, I love you brother but....

I am with Pure on this. There are a lot of "televangelists" and pastors that I have real reservations about. I have a brother in law that is also a Deacon at another church and loves Creflo Dollar. Rather than get into a deep theological discussions that might anger my brother, I told him to listen to the words of the man. See how many times he invokes the name of Christ vs. how many times he asks for money. That closed that conversation after he did what I asked. Watch Billy Graham and see how many times he invokes the name of Christ vs. asking for money. Quite frankly I have never heard Pastor Graham ask for money. Too many today fail to preach Scripture but rather preach a "feel good", "positive thinking", man-centered type "religion".

So same advice along different lines, listen to his words and compare it to Scripture. If you listen to any man and compare his teachings and walk to Scripture, you will know if he is true to his belief of the Word or not. So don't get mad at me, do the research yourself and see what your conclusion is.

I listened to Joel on the Larry King show a while back and was even more concerned than before. So today I researched for some of the transcript info:

Olsteen does not put Scripture first



On Larry King Live, the following very disturbing conversation occurred with Larry King and Joel Osteen:

KING: What if you're Jewish or Muslim, you don't accept Christ at all?

OSTEEN: You know, I'm very careful about saying who would and wouldn't go to heaven. I don't know ...

At this point, even Larry King appears surprised by Osteen’s answer. Then Larry tosses Osteen a "soft-ball" to explain his previous answer. And again Osteen openly denies that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way of salvation.

KING: If you believe you have to believe in Christ? They're wrong, aren't they?

OSTEEN: Well, I don't know if I believe they're wrong. I believe here's what the Bible teaches and from the Christian faith this is what I believe. But I just think that only God will judge a person's heart. I spent a lot of time in India with my father. I don't know all about their religion. But I know they love God. And I don't know. I've seen their sincerity. So I don't know. I know for me, and what the Bible teaches, I want to have a relationship with Jesus.

Again Osteen denies the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Notice, he praises the pagan, false-religion of India as "I know they love God." Unbelievable. . .

I’m sure some reading this are thinking, "Well, maybe Larry caught Joel Osteen flat footed. Maybe Osteen wasn’t prepared." If Osteen only had been given another chance to testify of the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ, he’d get it straightened out.

Osteen did get another chance. . .

After Larry King opened the phone lines, a concerned Christian asks Joel to clarify his previous statement (which we just viewed). Again Osteen could easily clear this up.

CALLER: Hello, Larry. You're the best, and thank you, Joe -- Joel -- for your positive messages and your book. I'm wondering, though, why you side-stepped Larry's earlier question about how we get to heaven? The Bible clearly tells us that Jesus is the way, the truth and the light and the only way to the father is through him. That's not really a message of condemnation but of truth.

OSTEEN: Yes, I would agree with her. I believe that. . .

KING: So then a Jew is not going to heaven?

OSTEEN: No. Here's my thing, Larry, is I can't judge somebody's heart. You know? Only God can look at somebody's heart, and so -- I don't know. To me, it's not my business to say, you know, this one is or this one isn't. I just say, here's what the Bible teaches and I'm going to put my faith in Christ. And I just I think it's wrong when you go around saying, you're saying you're not going, you're not going, you're not going, because it's not exactly my way. I'm just...

KING: But you believe your way.

OSTEEN: I believe my way. I believe my way with all my heart.

KING: But for someone who doesn't share it is wrong, isn't he?

OSTEEN: Well, yes. Well, I don't know if I look at it like that. I would present my way, but I'm just going to let God be the judge of that. I don't know. I don't know.

KING: So you make no judgment on anyone?

OSTEEN: No. But I...

And here Larry really tosses Joel a soft-ball. How about a God-defying atheist? And again, Osteen will not confess that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way of salvation.

KING: What about atheists?

OSTEEN: You know what, I'm going to let someone -- I'm going to let God be the judge of who goes to heaven and hell. I just -- again, I present the truth, and I say it every week. You know, I believe it's a relationship with Jesus. But you know what? I'm not going to go around telling everybody else if they don't want to believe that that's going to be their choice. God's got to look at your own heart. God's got to look at your heart, and only God knows that.

Friend, the Bible is clear. There is one, and only one way out of an eternal hell and that is the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Not simply "a relationship with Jesus Christ." Judas Iscariot had a "relationship" with Jesus Christ, walking and talking with the Lord, and even "kissing" the Lord (Luke 22:47), but Judas went to hell (Acts 1:25). Revelation 2:15 reads, "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,"

very recently... Joel is interviewed on Fox news on Sunday... always had those special interview and debate on Sunday. Joel done (excuse me for this comment) a lousy job explain of what Jesus Christ's standard. Jesus Christ do have standard and it is recorded in Bible black and white. Joel preach of how can we live in best life and how to feel great about ourselves. FALSE! Only contentment and satisfaction we can truly receive is within Jesus Christ. True, we always can pursue happiness but it is different from being satified and contented.

I am so sorry to get this into a big deal. Recently, i had a discussion with one of my good friend and he want to stop coming to our church becuase he like how Joel Osteen preach. But my friend dont realize that Joel do use Bible and scriptural (not too much as matter of fact) but not use Jesus Christ as an authority to our Bible.

I am not sure how to explain this clearly but like i said... i had some reservation about him.

well i think this is not good trashing a man of God in such a manner Joel is a great teacher and much like any church there is a cost to opperate every sunday a collection plate is passed just imagen the multitude of people would be lost with out his miniestry and Billy  did ask for money for nothing wrong with that it takes alot to do the outreach that they do some are not good i agree but to flat out dog him is not good it raise alot of eyebrows to do such a thing we all have opions about this but sometimes they do more harm than good

Forget about the money issue.

Listen to how Joel does not stand up and say that Christ is "the only way to the father". He acts like many "progressive" (liberal) pastors who profess there are "many ways" to Heaven.

We are commanded to point out those who do not preach the Word correctly. There are many good charismatic teachers who get the Word of God wrong.

I am only asking you to do your research of what he or anyone is saying and compare it to God's Word. If it is lacking or unscriptural then you know what the answer is.

No worries Nighthawk. I am wired with very thick skin. I spent years debating theologically with my step-mom who believed there are many ways to god. Many heated discussions (we are both of Irish descent  ) but we always loved each other. I believe there is only one way to the true and living God. I loved her anyway and she died unsaved.

Whenever there is discussion on a person, anyone, who professes to teach the Word of God, there are varying opinions on that person. That is why I say look at their life and their teaching and compare it to Scripture. Don't accept or reject my opinion, research it yourself.

Well, not to repeat what Deacon and Pure have said...which I don't think they were trashing anyone...just pointing out that there are "pastors" out there that DO NOT preach the Word of God but some message of health, wealth, and prosperity for ourselves...which God does not promise that we will have.  He DOES pomise true and eternal blessings in our lives of faith in Him.  Sadly, many pastors preach that very same message far too much and want to make their members feel good so they'll keep coming...and sadly with that message many will still go straight to hell.  The message of Salvation is clear...no shades of grey only black and white.  To present anything else is false teaching.  You can't preach blessing 100% of the time or conviction 100% of the time...you must have both.

I caution, as Deacon said, to ALWAYS compare what EVERYONE who preaches or teaches the Word of God to the WORD OF GOD.  That'll tell whether it is right or wrong.  Some others were mentioned that I'd also caution VERY much to apply the standard Deacon talks about to them too.  All these men should be prayed for that what they teach is the TRUTH...especially seeing how they are reaching so many so easy.

Not ALL televangelists are like that I'm sure...but sometimes it's easy to see where people's hearts are in how they live...but especially in the word they preach.  I've not looked into Mr Osteen much, nor any other televangelst...I'm just not fond of listening to radio preaching or TV preaching...because of things like this.  I do plan, however, to look more closely at them.  Not saying anyone is doing this, but, I wouldn't build all my theology on what they so often preach.  I prefer the man God has put over me as pastor.

no thank u! i love to see those three get on a roll. pure, mouko, deacon that was very well handled. you provided information to back up your reservations about a questionable tv evangelist. that shows any non christian or new person that could be reading this post that we dont just down questionable christians we provide info and insight and let them come to their own conclusions. i have said this before and i will say it again.i am hard headed, i only believe in what the holy bible says. i beleive every word written from front to back. i dont watch or listen to tv or radio preachers because their are so many out there confusing and twisting the word for personal gain that i keep it simple. i beleive that jesus died for my sins that he rose again and i am a born again christian and cannot wait to meet him in heaven. i trust in the lord with all my mind, heart, body and soul. i believe that the hoy bible is gods written word and the only true word. again i thank you!       Harold.

No Lion, I never thought you would buy into that...just mainly expressing my concerns as well...not about where you stood but about where many televangelists stand.  I'll give you my word on this one...if I EVER have concerns about your theology, I'll come to you about it first...but so far bud, that ain't been the case...and don't suspect it ever will be.

And yeah, it's fun having a good theological discussion.  Not exactly what I'd call this thread, but, close.  Also, people have to realize that two people can have these types of discussions and even disagree on certain things and still get along fine.  Just because I may disagree with a person's view on whatever doesn't mean I think they're as lost as a goose...unless they think that goose can save their soul...then well, I'd have to preach the Word to 'em.

I tell ya, if you ever want to have some good discussion on a topic, pop me a message and we'll talk all you want on whatever...I LOVE to talk about God and His Word, especially with one who loves it as much as me...we learn from these types of discussions.  We learn when we talk about what God has taught us individually.

Knighthawk, never apologize for what you know is right.  Never be apologetic about your faith...UNLESS, like I have before, you are shown in the Word how you are wrong.  I have been in that boat before and had to admit I was wrong and change my view on some things based on the fact that I was wrongly interpretting something.

Like we all believe, or at least I pray we all do, the Bible is our standard...our "looking glass" so-to-speak, on how we view the world and the things in it...we measure all things with it...even those who preach and/or teach the Word.

Sorry guys I am a long time getting my reply in. I just joined and new to this. I like the smiling preacher because I have seen to many depressed preachers and PEWWW sitters. I know one person that I would give my last eye tooth if he would listen to joel cause this one doesn't even like to mention GOD's name except  to the wrong way. I don't understand a lot of joel's teachings but I do know if him or any other preacher doesn't preach on the BLOOD OF CHRIST then we better ne careful, Without the shedding of blood there is NO remission of sin ( AMEN). But hopefully God will open joels eyes and help him to see that the Holy Spirits annointing is what he needs. OK Had to get my 2 cents in. God Bless u all.
