Today I have not been able to play in the server because of my low FPS and all the jaggies in the top and bottom parts of the lagometer window. My ping is about 10 points higher than normal to about 48 or so. My FPS runs between 40 and 8. The effect is that my character cannot move without real difficulty and the mouse is useless.

After messing around with various settings and resetting my modem and router, nothing improved.

I have a 64-bit Windows 7 system.

Now get this. I tried to fire up the game on this old 32-bit Windows XP system  with a 15-inch monitor and it ran fine. The ping was about the same, 48. But the FPS was 125 and the lagometer window was clean.

So, I can deduce that the problem is not in my internet (although ping is 10 points higher than normal). There is probably something wrong with with the settings in my Win 7 gaming computer.

Help! Does anybody know how to fix it?

Well, now it freezes at the opening "select profile" page. I have to push the reset button on my computer to get it restarted.

Next step. Reinstall the game.

I rolled back my video driver.

My ping is back to around 36. The lagometer window looks clean, but my FPS is hanging around 70-80. Rabbit is not lagging or skipping now.

I got up early this AM and pulled and reseated the second video card, and Device Manager recognized it, which it stopped doing last night. I ran the video driver update again, and this time it worked. So, the FPS is back up to 125 for now.

I was still getting the iw3 error, however, in the meantime. I played the single player version of CoD4 for one map. Then I ran the multiplayer version for a couple of maps -- no iw3mp error. Now, what iw3sp.exe has to do with iw3mp.exe I have no idea. But there may be some kind of connection.

I cannot say if I salved my problem. Time will tell.

Here are the system specs in case anybody has suggestions.

Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, sp 1
DirectX 11
MB = ASUS P7P55 WS Supercompter
processor = Intel Core i7, 2.93 GHz (4 core)
RAM = 16384 MB
vid = NVIDIA 9800 GT (PNY) X2, 4069 MB, driver = 8.7.12.8562 (10/15/2011)
aud = onboard Realtek High Definition Audio, driver = 6.0.1.6449 (8/30/11)  Note: I am not sure if I am using the right driver for this since I am using 5 analog ports (1:5 Turtle Beach headset) So, I will be going to Microsoft to download the Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0 to see if that could be causing my iw3mp error problem. Anybody know about this?

This is mindboggling stupid. it sounds like your vid card, but at the same time doesn't. None of your symptoms seem to add up.

Keep monitoring it rabbit. A pattern will show up at some point.

Good luck!

Deacon's Son has started a similar thread, "iw3 problem."

I think I may have found a really weird solution to my iw3mp problem that I posted there.

After several days of no problems, the annoyance has returned: low FPS with a very busy lagometer and a nonrespnding
mouse.

I have reduced my video and audio setting in the Control menu to no avail.

Looked like my second vid card was the problem. It was so hot I could hardly touch it. I pulled it, and the computer stopped getting the fps and lagometer problems. Both cards are nvidia 9800 gt.

I replaced both cards today with 2 nvidia gts 250 cards. My computer went bananas. I could not run the game because the mouse locked up at the game start up or the computer would go into a POST loop at windows start up -- kept rebooting. I pulled the second card again and the computer settled down.

I am thinking now that I have a problem with the second psi slot, both of which are 16x.

Any ideas?

rabbit ,couple of questions 1.have you tried running just one new card letting your machine install the drivers?2.go into the cmos and checked your settings for any changes?3.try and get it to boot to safe mode and run some diagnostics?4.Does your new card heat up like the old one?if so this could be a bad pci-e slot.Arch.

Thanks, Arch.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Yes. I think this is the problem. The overheated card may have burned out the second PCI x16 slot, as well as the x8 slot between it and and the primary x16 slot (where my vid card is). I wound up removing the second vid card altogether.

Moral: Poor FPS with spinky lagometer readings may mean a bad vid card, not a poor internet connection or messed up router settings as I had thought.

I looked at my BIOS/CMOS settings earlier this AM. I found some instructions on Google about out to check it you have a bad PCI slot, which told me nothing. I made no changes in the BIOS that I was aware of, but my computer balked at starting Windows after the POST.  I rebooted with the reset button, and Windows 7 stared running its own repair program. After 2 unsuccessful attempts, it finally clicked and I got windows back.

I have spent the rest of the morning running around in the game server. My FPS is not constant, fluctuating between 100 and 125, and my computer locked up once (in the School map), which necessitated a reset button reboot. Other than those two aggravations, I have not had a problem since the contraption started working again. There were no extraordinary spikes in the lagometer window.

Interestingly enough, no iw3mp errors yet today.

What was that diagnostic program that you were telling me about? I forgot.

Well, I have managed to get SLI to work and have dual video cards in the game again -- in a way. I get wavy or sometimes black bands moving up from the bottom of the screen. This goes on in Modern Warfare 2 single player as well as CoD4 multiplayer. This goes on in the game itself and in the menu pages.

But the FPS seems to a stay constant 125.

How it happened: Windows 7 went into self repair mode, announced that it failed, and shut itself off, but there there was a funny little update  icon in the task bar when I rebooted. I clicked it, and an NVIDIA update started. It went through its thing before announcing the update failed. I turned off the computer and clicked the off-on switch in the back. I waited a few minutes and turned the computer back on. There was an announcement that the NVIDIA update was finished. I clicked on the NVIDA settings icon on  the task bar, and the display said that my vid cards were SLI'ed -- finally.

Like I said, however, the screen is weird in games, although the weirdness occurs only in gaming apparently.
